Earlier this month, Soma launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $100,000 for a new water filter to rival those offered by Brita and other companies. The campaign raised $50,000 in just 36 hours, but that proved to be a mixed blessing for the team running it.

“We were being inundated with everything from tweets to Facebook posts to messages on Kickstarter,” said Mike Del Ponte, a co-founder of Soma. “It was crazy. We thought we did a really good job of preparing — we had a dedicated customer service person and a dedicated social media person — and it was still just nuts.”
