IndiegogoCrowdHoster by CrowdtiltCrowdfunding trail blazer Indiegogo received recognition as runner up for the Biggest Social Impact Crunchies Award this past Thursday.  Bested by Reddit who took the prized Crunchie.  Kickstarter was also in the running along with micro-finance site Kiva.  Last year the same award was delivered to ubiquitous Twitter.

Another Crowdfunding site was also up for a possible award,  Crowdtilt which was in the running for Best New Start up of 2012.   The award was given to Coursera. Pinterest received this award in 2011.

The annual event is sponsored by tech news sites Techcrunch, GigaOm and VentureBeat. GitHub won the award for Best Overall Start-Up.

The fact that crowdfunding sites were added to the list of potential winners this year is another element in the ongoing growth and recognition of crowdfunding and the impact it is having on the tech and finance world.
