Fully Funded Indiegogo Campaign Offers Protection From New Drone Overlords

Drones have taken center stage in the fight for privacy in the United States as more police forces and government agencies announce plans to employ drones in a variety of ways.

DroneShield is a product crowdfunding on Indiegogo that allows preorders of their proprietary drone detection device. For $69 individuals can preorder a DroneShield, which promises to offer 24/7 notification protection from domestic drones.

Those well versed in crowdfunded tech will not be surprised to know that the product plans to use the Raspberry Pi as a platform for the device. The integrated microphone listens for drones in the sky, matching sound signatures against a crowdsourced public database of signatures matching known drones. The product developers say that the device can discern between the sound a drone makes and more common ambient noises like those from lawnmowers or leaf blowers.

If a match is detected the owner is alerted via email or SMS. If the device can discern the specific type of drone the product owner may even be told what type of drone it is in the alert itself.

The campaign is already fully funded, with over a hundred people having already preordered the device. Plenty of additional information is available on DroneShield’s web site, including a repository of news information regarding the use of drones for domestic purposes.
