This week, executive chef at Marylebone’s Chiltern Firehouse, Nuno Mendes, launched a crowdfunding campaign on Seedrs to raise £1.75 million so that he can reopen his restaurant, Viajante.

Viajante 2According to the Evening Standard, Mendes closed his original Bethnal Green site in February 2014. It ran for over four years, gaining a Michelin star just eight months after opening which it maintained until the end.

The campaign’s description reads:

“A Portuguese chef with a track record of success, Nuno Mendes cooks with a passion recognised around the globe. A pioneer in gastronomy, Nuno is a traveller or ‘viajante’ who has explored the globe in search of unique ingredients, innovative techniques and first-hand farming experiences.

“Nuno believes that Metropolitan Wharf, a revitalised Victorian riverfront warehouse in Wapping, is the ideal setting to launch his newest restaurant, Viajante. In his new intimate dining experience with its stunning waterfront location, diners will revel in a tasting menu of numerous courses bringing wave after wave of breathtaking tastes and textures in a setting of refined beauty and calm.

“This is an exciting opportunity for investors to become part of something special – to get closer to Nuno and his extraordinary skills as he seeks to break down the barriers of fine dining and open its doors to the people who matter most to him – his guests.”

Mendes stated:

viajante-1“As many of you who I have had a chance to meet may know, Viajante was a very special project for myself and the team, a project that we were all incredibly proud of and extremely sad to have to end. We all believed that the restaurant was going from strength to strength at the time of closing and ever since I have been committed to launching it one day.

“We have now secured an amazing location and we have decided to launch Viajante through an equity crowdfunding platform because we want to give our friends and supporters, the people of London, Portugal and from around the world, a chance to become part of making our dream a reality, while also sharing in the planned success.”

The location of the new Viajante will be in Metropolitan Wharf and is noted to be a revitalised Victorian warehouse on the river in Wapping. Those who invest in the fund offering will receive 33.33% equity. The aim is to open the restaurant as early as Fall 2016.
