GoFundMe Launches Funding Contest to Help Provide Clean Drinking Water For Flint Residents

On Friday, crowdfunding platform GoFundMe announced it has launched a crowdfunding contest to help funds for the Flint Water Crisis.

gofundmeFor those who don’t know what has happened, Flint’s water system has been containment and research showed that lead poisoning was found and as a result, between 6,000 and 12,000 residents reportedly has severely high levels of lead in the blood and experienced a range of serious health problem. The state of Michigan declared a state of emergency for the city earlier this month.

The GoFundMe team stated:

“The GoFundMe campaign that raises the most money between 6:00am PT on Friday, January 22, 2016, through 6:00pm PT on Friday, January 29, 2016, to provide clean drinking water to the people of Flint, will receive a $10,000 contribution from GoFundMe.

 

“The winner of the Contest will receive $10,000 toward the winner’s Fundraising Campaign.  Odds of winning are affected by the number of eligible entries received by the Contest Sponsor by the Contest End Date.  The prize will be deposited into the winner’s Fundraising Campaign within one (1) week of the Contest End Date. There is no substitution, cash equivalent or transfer of prizes allowed.  In order to receive a prize, winner may be required to provide proof of identification or eligibility.  All federal, state, and local taxes, if any, are the responsibility of the winner.”

Here’s how to enter the Contest: If you have not already, create a Fundraising Campaign on the Site to raise money to supply clean drinking water for the people of Flint, Michigan (the “Purpose”).

GoFundMe then explained who is eligible for the Contest:

Flint 2“The Contest is open to (a) legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are at least 18 years old at the time of entry and (b) legal entities incorporated or organized within the 50 United States or the District of Columbia.  By participating in the Contest, each entrant accepts the terms and conditions stated in these Official Rules, agrees to be bound by the decisions of the Contest Sponsor and warrants that s/he is eligible to participate in the Contest.  Employees, independent contractors, officers, and directors of the Contest Sponsor, its affiliates and subsidiaries, and their respective advertising, promotion, and fulfillment agencies, and legal advisors, and their immediate family members and persons living in the same household, are not eligible to participate in the Contest.

 

“CONTEST IS VOID WHERE PROHIBITED OR RESTRICTED BY LAW and is subject to applicable federal, state, provincial/territorial and local laws and regulations.  Entries that are submitted in connection with the Contest will only be eligible if (a) the entrant’s Fundraising Campaign, and related content posted by the entrant, does not contain content that is unlawful, hateful or obscene, in the Contest Sponsor’s sole discretion, and (b) the funds from the Fundraising Campaign are being used, and will continue to be used, solely for the Purpose.”

In regards to the winner selection, GoFundMe added:

Flint 1“Within five (5) days of the Contest End Date, the entrant with the Fundraising Campaign that generates the most online donations raised for the Purpose during the Contest Period will be deemed the potential winner and will be notified by the Contest Sponsor via e-mail.  In the event the potential winner does not accept the prize within two (2) business days of notification, the winner is ineligible, or the prize or prize notification is not deliverable, the entrant with the Fundraising Campaign that generates the second most money raised for the Purpose during the Contest Period may be contacted as an alternate winner.  The Contest Sponsor is not responsible for and shall not be liable for late, lost, misdirected or unsuccessful efforts to notify the potential winner(s).

 

“The winner agrees to the use of his/her/its name, address (by reference only to the state, province, county or region), likeness, and/or prize information by Contest Sponsor for promotional purposes in any medium without additional permission or compensation to the extent permitted by law.  Where lawful, the potential winner may be required to sign and return a Publicity Consent and Liability Release.”
