Frank Zappa Film Smashes Previous Kickstarter Documentary Record; Nears $1M During the Final Days

With nearly 24 hours until its Kickstarter campaign comes to an end, Who the Fuck is Frank Zappa?’s documentary has secured nearly $950,000 thanks to over 7,000 backers. The new film reportedly smashed the crowdfunding portal’s previous record of $859,425, which was achieved by Bill Nye Film.

Frank Zappa 3Last month, British actor and filmmaker Alex Winter took to the crowdfunding giant to raise $500,000 for the documentary. Revealing why he decided to do a film about the late musician, Winter stated:

“Frank Zappa is one of the strangest, most amazing and influential figures of our era, but his definitive story has never been told. Now, for the first time ever, the Zappas have given us complete, unrestricted access o the contents of Frank’s private vault and their full blessing and support to tell his story.

“But before we can finish telling Frank’s story, we have to catalog, save, digitize and preserve a vast archive of unreleased audio, video, images, documents and more. Together, we can save Frank’s vault. And when we do, we’ll have everything we need to finally answer the question: Who the fuck is Frank Zappa?”

Alex went on to say that he wishes to reveal Zappa’s full life story, not just his days as a musician:

Frank Zappa 2“Others remember Zappa as a political thought leader who founded the Rock The Vote campaign, testified before congress against censorship regulations, helped reconstruct the cultural identity of Czechoslovakia after a civil revolution, and, rumor has it, entered presidential race in 1993, shortly before his life was taken by prostate cancer.”

The film will be the first ever all-access, fully-authorized documentary. Although the campaign was looking to raise $500,000, the true amount needed to finish the campaign is $3 million. Winter explained:

“I’m not sure what we’ll find in the Vault, but for every $500K we raise – up to our full goal of $3MM – I promise to share, ideally, as much as an hour of new material, be that clips of interviews, concert audio, unreleased music, scraps of video… We have no idea what we’ll find in there, but we’re excited to share our journey of finding out!”

The campaign’s perks range from albums to even owning Zappa’s former home (for $9 million).
