Crowdfunding Mailbox: Mr Beam II Desktop Laser Cutter, Nuheara IQbuds & OLO 3D Printer for your Smartphone

Snow covered mailboxMr. Beam is a nice validation of the rewards crowdfunding process. A quick look at campaign comments from last year show several backers thanking the team and calling the product awesome.  Typically people are quick to complain and slow to compliment so when you see genuine backers lauding a campaign that is a very good sign.

The Beam team launched a desktop laser cutter and engraving device in 2014.  With only a minor delay, it looks like all supporters received what they purchased.  The project was not enormous having raised $179,399 from 364 backers.  But now they have launched Mr. Beam II and this time the campaign is bigger and the product has gotten better.

Mr Beam IIMr. Beam II is an affordable laser cutter/engraver that sits on your desk and everyone can use.  The plug and play device can cut or engrave on fabric, plywood, latex, leather and more. Engraving can be completed on a longer list of materials.  Beyond some of the obvious uses you can also do things like make an engraving of a photo or turn it into a puzzle.  Usually you find features like this in a factory somewhere but Mr. Beam brings laser fun to a home based audience.  Crowdfunding on Kickstarter now, in the first few days the campaign has easily topped its $91,000 goal and is now around $400,000.

Nuheara in EarWireless earbuds will soon be everywhere. As the tech has gotten better the ability to miniaturize features has improved dramatically. NuHeara IQbuds is the newest entry into the wire free headphone space. Probably the best known crowdfunding campaign for wire free earbuds is the Bragi Dash which is shipping now.  Nuheara IQbuds accomplishes much of what Bragi does but it also states is is incorporating a hearing boost feature making it easier for the wearer to hear. Note – NuHeara does not call these “hearing aids”. They point to the fact that a combination of noise canceling and assisted listening make their product cool.  Also NuHeara uses NFMI tech (not Bluetooth) to connect each earbud. This is the similar approach of Bragi Dash and is superior to connecting each pair.  The IQbuds are said to deliver 4 hours of non-stop streaming (or making calls).  Crowdfunding on Indiegogo, this one is being operated in partnership with Wearable World in San Francisco.

Olo in action 3D PrinterIt seems like it was just last month when 3D printers were being promoted everywhere as an (expensive) addition to your home.  I expect prices to drop just like ink jet printers did so many years ago.  OLO has got to be the first 3D printer to come in under $100. Granted the OLO “Smartphone 3D Printer” does not have all the bells and whistles. But what you do get, according to the campaign creators, is a printer smaller than a shoebox that anyone can use.

The trick is in using your smartphone as the brains of the device. Then the creators have added a printer that uses photosensitive resin to print.  This one is on Kickstarter with a bit over a week to go. Over 14,000 backers have signed up to support this project with the total now over $2 million.
