As reported in MobiHealthNews, the Shine activity tracker was launched on Indiegogo as opposed to Kickstarter which does not allow medical products.
Misfit had planned on launching the product through the better known crowdfunding site Kickstarter, but like many others working in digital health, the startup found Kickstarter to be unreceptive.
“Kickstarter prohibits all fitness, sports, health, and medical products across the board,” Vu told MobiHealthNews. “Despite the number of exceptions they’ve made, they wouldn’t bend the rules for us. Indiegogo on the other hand, embraced us with open arms… so the choice was fairly obvious. We made the decision [to go with Indiegogo], then the next morning we got the rejection [from Kickstarter] so it was meant to be.”
With 32 days left in the campaign they have already surpassed their $100,000.00 goal. The shine has been widely covered in the popular press. There are other Activity Trackers on the market but Shine’s shear elegance and simplicity have captured the interest of the crowdfunding masses. This device tracks how active you are throughout the day – helping you achieve personal goals. It syncs with your iOS or Android device wirelessly allowing you to track progress over time.
Perhaps Kickstarter should revisit their apparent aversion to the health segment? I wonder what the over 1300 funders would say to that. Shipping is scheduled for March of 2013.
