Crowdfunding Gains Traction in U.K.

As founders of escapethecity.org, a website that helps high-flying executives leave the rat race of corporate life, Rob Symington and Dom Jackman didn’t want to rely on City financing when they needed money to expand their young company in London.

“We escaped the City and we didn’t want to go back to the City to fund our future,” said Mr. Symington, a former Ernst & Young management consultant.

Instead of tapping banks or venture capitalists, they turned to the internet–and a bunch of strangers–to get investment, an idea known as “crowdfunding.”
