Game World Feels Impact of Crowdfunding

Gambitious

In an article in VentureBeat the author focuses on 12 items that dramatically impacted gaming in 2012.  Of course Zynga is on thelist.  Where would social society be without Farmville?  Rovio was not on the list so we are not going to speculate about the impact Angry Birds has had on our youth (and more than a fare share of the elder lot).

Number three on the list is Crowdfunding which should come as no surprise.  The gaming industry may have been changed forever by this recent phenomena.

Kickstarter launches a crowdfunding revolution

Legends from Zynga…developers found a new fountain of money in their own fans. Tim Schafer’s Double Fine Productions tapped the crowdfunding site Kickstarter to fund a new adventure game. It raised more than $1 million on its first day and wound up raking in $3.3 million in 30 days by March 13.

This success was soon followed by others.  In fact the category “Games” is number two in total dollars raised for 2012 on Kickstarter. Just after Film and Video.  Quite a feat!

Gambitious followed with their game only Crowdfunding platform.    There are so many other stories – many successful – that it has become difficult to follow them all.

No telling where all this is going but we expect the gaming industry has

changed for good.  2013 should be a very exciting year for Crowdfunding and the Gaming industry.
