Deal Focus: Costa Rican Surf School Crowdfunds to be Carbon Neutral

Safari Surf School in Costa Rica Two Thumbs UpThe Safari Surf School located in Nosara, Costa Rica has launched a crowdfunding campaign for their ongoing pursuit of becoming carbon neutral.  Crowdfunding on Indiegogo their goal is to raise only $5000.00 to accomplish their objectives.  As of this writing they were well on their at over $3000.00 raised with 12 days left to go.

The campaign to raise the funds would aid in getting off the grid which can be more than a bit dicey at times at their location in Costa Rica.

…budgeted for the construction of the shelter, the biodiesel system and the biochar system, as well as researching and testing the use of homemade reagents in the conversion process as a substitute for imported, toxic and expensive chemicals such as methanol. With the combined usage of the “greasercycle,” a stationary bicycle connected to a pump which mixes the fuel as you pedal, as well as a biochar heat transfer system, this innovative model can run completely off-grid. Considering how much the power goes out in Nosara, especially in the rainy season, along with limited outside access during emergency situations such as seasonal flooding or earthquakes, having a fuel source that is independent from imported resources and power could potentially be a lifesaver.

Safari Surf School Costa RicaThe Safari Surf School was founded in 1998 and labels themselves the “Ultimate Surf School in the Ultimate Location”.  They are sponsored by Billabong and have been awarded the title of “Best Outfitter on Earth” by National Geographic.   Safari Surf School is part of a growing movement for Eco Resorts and their desire to operate in a method which has little impact on their environment.  Costa Rica is noted for their bio diversity, incredible beauty and exotic wildlife.  As more successful travel projects target sustainability this movement can only grow.

Reported in the Costa Rica Star,

(they will be) preparing the Hotel Casa Tucan for Sustainable Surf Tourism Sunset at Safari Surf School Costa RicaCertification by the Center for Surf Research and Sustainable Tourism Certification by the Costa Rican Tourism Board in June of this year.
