uBiome Studies The Microbes Living On And Inside Of You

uBiome will complete a successful Indiegogo campaign today, more than doubling their original goal of $100,000.

From the campaign summary…

uBiome is a citizen science project that allows the public access to cutting edge sequencing technology to understand their health through the microbiome.

Your microbiome is described as another body organ made up of microbial cells rather than human ones. These cells can outnumber human cells in and on our body by 10 to 1.Studies have already linked an individuals microbiome composition to things like obesity, mood, eczema, allergies and gut disorders to name a few.

Using techniques used in the NIH’s $173 million dollar Human Microbiome Project, we can tell you what microbes are living in your body, compare you to others, and keep you up to date on research that applies to your data.

By contributing to the campaign, you can have any or all of 5 aspects of your microbiome analyzed by the uBiome team. Your data will go toward building the largest database of microbiome information in the world.

One interesting note from their campaign involves the designation of “country ambassadors.” In encouraging interested people from around the world to reach out, the uBiome team was able to build a network of 30 country ambassadors that have helped spread the word about their efforts.

This campaign ends on midnight January 31st, so those interested in a personalized assessment of their microbiome health still have time to participate.
