The Best British Crowdfunding Sites

British FlagWith the launch of Kickstarter in the UK, crowdfunding is a hot topic. There are already an estimated 700 crowdfunding platforms worldwide – here are the best British sites.

Seedrs is the first crowdfunding platform for start-ups where investors can earn equity returns if the business is sold, floats or pays a dividend. Entrepreneurs can raise up to £150,000 in equity capital. The company, co-founded in 2009 by Jeff Lynn, a lawyer, and Carlos Silva, a financial IT expert, has raised more than £500,000 and is authorised by the FSA (seedrs.com).

Set up in March 2012 by the journalist Chris Gourlay, Spacehive is a funding platform for public space projects. The site offers a list of projects, from new parks to playgrounds, towards which people can pledge money. Like Kickstarter, money is only taken once the total funding target has been reached (spacehive.com).
