Dr. Eva Sapi Crowdfunding Lyme Research On Indiegogo

Dr. Eva Sapi is a well-established name in the world of Lyme disease research. After contracting the condition herself she has dedicated her career to exploring ways to control and cure the disease, and she now has a campaign on Indiegogo to help further those efforts.

Dr. Sapi was a cancer researcher who transferred to the University of New Haven in the early 2000’s. Shortly thereafter she had contracted Lyme.

Lyme disease can be an extremely debilitating condition that results in symptoms ranging from fatigue and heart problems to neurological disorders. There is currently no cure.

It is also a notoriously problematic disease from both a treatment and an insurance standpoint. Historically there have been many cases of doctors misdiagnosing Lyme prompting the designation of Lyme Literate Physicians, or LLMD’s. All the while rates of the disease continue to climb. There are over 300,000 new cases diagnosed every year.

The Indiegogo campaign aims to equip Dr. Sapi with an atomic force microscope for her research. From the campaign page…

She’s going to use that microscope to investigate biofilms—a protective barrier that makes it hard to kill off Lyme bacteria. We want to continue our fundraising campaign to help support this important work. A generous donor has agreed to match dollar for dollar (up to $10,000!) whatever we raise to support Dr. Sapi’s biofilm research.

The campaign is already fully funded and contributors can deduct donations on their taxes due to the verified nonprofit status of the group behind the campaign. The campaign is being supported by LymeDisease.org.
