More than 4000 donors have participated in the Gawker organized crowdfunding campaign which they have affectionally labeled “Crackstarter“. Over $100,000 had been raised towards their $200,000 to purchase the video which has been said to potray Mr. Ford in an unflattering fashion. Rob Ford recently denied these allegations as “ridiculous”.
The crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo is an effort to obtain an alleged video showing the Toronto Mayor, Rob Ford, enjoying a pipe of crack cocaine. As previously covered the pay for proof approach by Gawker media had raised some questions about the ethical nature of the campaign.
The campaign just recently incorporated some “perks” to reward supporters of the effort. Some of these rewards include;
For $200: Commemorative Print. If you donate $100 or more, you’ll receive a limited-edition hand-drawn digital painting of Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine by Gawker art director Jim Cooke. (Only available if the video purchase is consummated.)
For $1,000: Dinner with the Gawker Staff. Donors of $1,000 or more will be invited to a dinner with the staff of Gawker at Public restaurant in New York City, date and time to be determined. (You’ll have to get yourself to New York; only available if the video purchase is consummated.)
For $10,000: The Rob Ford Crack iPhone. Donate $10,000 and we’ll give you the actual iPhone that was used to record the video. This perk is, of course, contingent on the deal actually happening as we hope. There’s a chance that the owners will deliver the video but not the phone. There’s only one, so first to donate $10,000 gets it.
Most donations were small amounts. One report indicated Gawker had donated $15,000 directly to the effort.
With 6 days remaining in the campaign it was not clear as to whether or not Gawker would reach their crowdfunding goal. Regardless of whether they receive the video or not this was certainly a traffic builder for their site and the earned media was priceless.
