Crowdfunding Mailbox: Bermuda Born Leather, Sensoria Fitness Sock, Send a Pair of Glasses to Cambodia and Funding Charleston Playmakers

The crowdfunding mailbox at Crowdfund Insider is never empty but I would not have it any other way.  I love to hear and see these different projects and wish we could mention them all.  As you would expect some are pretty “out there” but most are good projects in need of some crowdfunding support.  As the rewards platforms grow, we expect the need to differentiate specific campaigns will grow as well.

So coming up this week we have Bermuda Born, from Patrice Morgan who is of course a resident of Bermuda.  She is a graduate of the London College of Fashion so she has the cred AND she has the goods.

Sensoria Fitness Socks is a new angle on the fitness tracking craze.  I use apps, others use bracelets and now we have Smart Socks!  It seems so obvious too.

Next up is a “Verified Non-Profit Campaign” to help those in need in Cambodia by providing glasses.  It all started with an orphanage in Cambodia which needed eye glasses for the children.  Run by college students looking to do something good in the world.  We always need more of that.

And finally we have a crowdfunding offering which is not from one of the big platforms.  FundingCharleston is a local based crowdfunding platform which is doing big things for the community of Charleston.  They have crowdfunded 11 campaigns and raised over $13,000.00 to date. The specific campaign we are looking at is to send Charleston Playmakers, a traveling basketball team, to the Nationals – really a great cause.

Bermuda Born Patrice Morgan

Bermuda Born: Luxury Accessories for Everyday Living – Indiegogo

My name is Patrice Morgan and I am the designer and sole creator of Bermuda Born. Bermuda Born is an independent, luxury accessories and gifts brand that was founded in my island home of Bermuda.

As a graduate of London College of Fashion, I am ready to use my knowledge of making highly skilled accessories, to bring you premium products that feel good to the touch and are made by the finest craftsmen out there.

I created Bermuda Born because I am really passionate about providing products that will survive for generation after generation.

I am concerned with the environmental impact of “fast fashion”. Fast fashion is the result of consumers demanding trend-driven, cheaply made products. However, this has created a disposable culture, which has resulted in global environmental issues in the form of not only clothing landfills, but the human factor.

My vision is to switch the fashion game around by changing the way consumers view quantity over quality. I want consumers to realize that fashion can be something special that’s worth investing in, whilst still remaining affordable. My aim is to create products, which are not only nostalgic, but will stand the test of time.

Sensoria Fitness Smart Sock Tracker – Indiegogo

Running. Reinvented.

Imagine a super accurate fitness tracker that tells you how far and how fast you run. Now imagine a smart sock that tells you how WELL you run!

  • Do you find your fitness tracker to be accurate?
  • Does it automatically detect your stance? Does it automatically detect if you’re running, standing or walking?
  • Does your fitness tracker measure your stride cadence? How about your running form?
  • Does it tell you how your foot is landing?
  • How about when to speed up to beat your personal best or when to slow down to avoid injury?

Sensoria Fitness Does.

Gift of Giving Cambodia Eye Glasses

Give the Gift of Vision: Send a pair of glasses to a Cambodian in need – Indiegogo

It started as a small project, to do some good on a family vacation. Donations were collected to fit an orphanage in Cambodia with new glasses. As each person put glasses on, their eyes lit up. One said, “I thought I couldn’t see the board because it was so far! Now I know it was because I can’t see. I can see!” We knew we needed to continue this project.

Now, we are a group of college students, who founded a non-profit organization, Seeing is Believing, to provide eye-glasses to school-children, orphans, and others in need in Cambodia. We are a completely volunteer-based, 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

From August 1st to August 14th, we will be distributing glasses in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. We work directly with local Cambodian optometrists in order to provide the most amount of glasses possible. As a result:

  • For $15, a child can be screened and fitted with a brand new pair of prescription glasses.
  • $5 buys someone in need a brand new pair of reading glasses.
  • $125 can screen an entire orphanage and fit any in need with brand new glasses.

Think about that! Even the littlest contribution can make a huge impact. Not only do you buy someone a pair of glasses, but you restore their vision, you allow them to read, to drive, to watch the sunrise, to see their family, and so much more.

Charleston Playmakers

SEND CHARLESTON PLAYMAKERS TO NATIONALS – FundingCharleston

WHAT IS GOING ON

The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) experience is designed to introduce, teach, and develop the fundamentals of basketball and our organization is proud of the work we have already accomplished. The Charleston Playmakers basketball team, a travel team competing on the AAU circuit, is comprised of talented young men from Charleston and Dorchester County middle and high schools.  These kids are finding a healthy outlet in basketball which is providing them opportunities in life they otherwise would not have. Our organization is invested in a special group of adolescent men who have shown great skill in the game of basketball while continuing to excel in the classroom and in life.

WHAT WE ARE DOING

We are proud to have helped these young men gain the exposure they need to obtain college scholarships.  Every day we provide an outlet from the harsh realities of their local neighborhoods. We now serve 48 unbelievably talented young athletes and are eager to continue our mission. We are proud of our accomplishments thus far, however, our work is far from over. This association is composed of a group of committed young men, coaches, parents, and school teachers and administrators working together as a solid family unit.  We have many talented young men who are capable of playing NCAA Division 1 athletics in college. We believe, with our help, that these athletes can bring national fame to North Charleston.
