The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is an innovative smartphone. I could make the case that the Galaxy S3 saved Android by offering what was arguably the first Android phone widely recognized as a worthy alternative to Apple’s iPhone. The S4 Active takes the latest incarnation of this smartphone and adds a really important (and rare) feature: waterproofing.
The one gripe with the Active is the flimsy cover for the charging port, which is made of plastic and relies on a gasket to keep water out. In short, if it isn’t sealed tight the Active is subject to any liquid punishment the owner happens to dole out. If the phone is water damaged, AT&T has said they will only replace it once.
Enter the WIQIQi, a wireless charging adpter for the Galaxy S4 Active. Wireless charging for this smartphone means never having to fiddle with the charging cover.
The WIQIQi can be had just as a receiver or as a receiver/charger combo. The receiver will work with a variety of charging stations on the market. The Indiegogo campaign page lists compatible devices. A $22 includes a claim to one receiver, while $49 will net a claim to a receiver and one of WIQIQi’s Versa charging stations. The campaign page states that the device is made to fit underneath the waterproof gasket core to the Active.
Delivery is said to happen as soon as the campaign closes, and it seems likely that that is exactly what will take place. The product was developed by Monster Watts, who already has other smartphone accessories on the market.
The campaign is a little under halfway to a goal of $10,000, but the campaign is flexibly funded so the campaign’s creators will be obligated to deliver regardless. They’ll just get hit with the extra 4% fee for not hitting the goal if they can’t amass a little over $5,000 in the next couple of weeks.
The team has another offering on Indiegogo for regular S4 owners as well, although that campaign hasn’t had the success of the campaign for the Active.
