Crowdfunding On Indiegogo: VMatter Knives For Chefs Promise To Stay Sharp For Years

There is nothing more dangerous in a kitchen than a dull knife. It’s why chefs spend hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on cutlery. Now a company called VMatter has launched an Indiegogo campaign with a new take on the kitchen knife.

The VMatter team says they have developed an “amorphous alloy” that acts like a metal but has an atomic structure more akin to glass. Functionally, they say this makes their metal 20% lighter and 330% more elastic than steel, 250% stronger than titanium and highly resistant to corrosion. The knives are also said to hold a sharp blade for years instead of weeks.

VMatter president Blair Dahl says that these features will help VMatter knives “revolutionize food preparation in the home and in commercial kitchens.”

VMatter is the result of the collaboration between CEO and Founder James Kang, a pioneer in the field of amorphous metal alloys, and President Blair Dahl. Kang developed the methods and machinery that mold the metal alloy into useful net shape parts (meaning the initial production of the item is very close to its ultimate final shape), making the VMatter cutlery line possible. Dahl is a successful entrepreneur with substantial experience building companies from the ground up. His core business was built on serving manufacturing sector businesses in Southern California for the past 25 years. Together, Dahl and Kang created the perfect application for the material used in VMatter cutlery.

The knives are definitely expensive and out of the price range for your typical at-home cook. A claim to a set of four knives will run $649. It is definitely a product geared more toward professional chefs and seasoned cooking vets.

The campaign is a fixed funding campaign and the money is to be used in part to bulk purchase the alloy used to make the knives, which is said to be 20 times more expensive than normal steel.

To take VMatter Cutlery to the next level and bring these revolutionary knives to market, our indiegogo campaign needs your support.  We need capital to purchase bulk raw VMatter alloy, purchase multiple molds, and invest in the equipment necessary to scale up our production capacity.  With support beyond our funding goal, we will be able to expand our product line even further.

And of course, the team posted the ubiquitous tomato cutting footage! Watch below…
