Video Game High School Crowdfunds for 3rd Time, Switches to Indiegogo

Video Game High School FunVideo Game High School (VGHS), one of the most successful video/film crowdfunding campaigns ever, has fired up a crowdfunding campaign for the third time.  For this campaign creators Freddie Wong and Matthew Arnold are looking to raise $750,000.  The Indiegogo crowdfunding round was just launched last week on January 23rd and is over $200,000 today quickly capturing the support of their dedicated backers (over $170,000 was raised on day one).

This is not the first time that VGHS has leveraged crowdfunding.  Video Game Highs School initially raised funding on Kickstarter back in 2011.  For their first Kickstarter campaign they raised $273,725 on a goal of $75,000.  The next round for Season 2 of the series raised $808,341 on Freddie Wong and Matthew Arnolda goal of $636,010 from over 10,000 backers.  The shift to Indiegogo was a bit of a surprise but was recently explained in an article on Venture Beat by Wong,

“We wanted to make the final season of VGHS our biggest season yet and wanted to have flexibility and reach in terms of potential backers” said Freddie Wong. “Indiegogo’s integration with PayPal as well as the ability to run the campaign off our own site made it an obvious choice for the optimal crowd funding platform of this project.”

Indiegogo announced the new feature of embedding campaigns on crowdfunders own web sites just recently.  Titled “Outpost” – Indiegogo recognized that some campaigns already possessed a significant native audience and allowing embedded campaigns was a good strategic option for these types of campaigns.  While not the first crowdfunding platform to facilitate embedded campaigns (i.e. Fundrazr, Pozible and more), Indiegogo’s feature appears to be a smart move as they have captured a high profile, high dollar film project with the potential of thousands of backers.

Video Game High SchoolThe Video Game High School series has received an incredible 65 million views and today is available on iTunes, Netflix, Xbox and PS3 – not to mention Blu-Ray & DVD.  The series was acknowledged as the Best Web Series of 2013 by Variety which is a pretty prestigious film industry accolade.

Season 3 has been titled the “Final Season” but in the pitch video Wong shares that in the end this may not be the case.  For those of you who are not in the know, VGHS is an action / comedy series about “surviving high school, fitting in, and landing that perfect head shot.”  Definitely emblematic of today’s youth.

Rewards levels start at just $5.  $15 will get you a DRM Free 1080p/4k download of each episode for the entire season (quite a bargain).  Some of the higher level rewards, topping out at $10,000 have already found multiple backers.  VGHS is certainly indicative as to how much the film / video industry has been inalterably changed with the advent of crowdfunding.
