Crowdfunding Mailbox: RXActive Resistance Wear, Lightbug Solar GPS Tag & AfterShokz Bone Conduction Headphones

Mailbox Port CarlingI have many different pairs of headphones – both bluetooth and connected.  Several of them have been sourced from crowdfunding campaigns. Whether I am sitting at my desk making phone calls or on the go – inevitably I am plugged into something.  When I bike or run, something I try to do daily, my go-to are Powerbeats.  They are just ok though. Uncomfortable to wear, the sound quality is just ok and the bluetooth connectivity is fickle.  AfterShokz Trekz Bone Conduction Headphones may be the answer to my needs.

AfterShokz is a company that has been in business since 2011. Using technology originally designed for the military and law enforcement, the company is designing “premium stereo headphones” for open ear AfterShokz Trekzlistening that is priced for “every-day” use.  According to the campaign page the design allows the user to hear everything around them while simultaneously listening to music – or making calls.  A noise cancelling mic is included to exclude surrounding noise.  Fully charged you get 6 hours of listening and talk time.  The price is really reasonable at just $99 a pair.  Crowdfunding on Indiegogo, AfterShokz quickly topped its $65,000 goal and has raised over $200,000 today.  Ships in January.

I am always looking for ways to boost my workout. Time is at a premium and a trip to the gym or a run in the park is necessary but takes a lot of time.  RXActive is a new type of activewear that incorporates the characteristics of resistance training – in the fabric.  That’s right.  You wear the RXActive wear foundersclothes and the design helps you burn calories and build muscle.  According to the crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, the results are compelling: 23% more muscle activity and 14% increase in calorie burn.

Founded by Frank Yao, an NYU med student with a degree in in Biomed engineering, and Keeth Smart, an MBA from Columbia who won a Silver Medal at the Beijing Olympics, I think these guys are on to something.

During the past 2 years they have refined the concept and product and are ready to go to market. I can envision RXActive wear in sporting goods stores everywhere (or acquired by Under Armour).  You can back this campaign now and receive your own resistance active by November.

LightBug Solar Powered GPS TagThe problem with most item-finder / tracking devices today is they tend to rely on Bluetooth/WiFi technology so the range is rather limited. The GPS/Mobile devices are too big and use too much battery power to be super practical. Lightbug has taken a bit of a different approach to solving the tracking solution.

By using solar energy to keep the battery juiced and tapping into 2G mobile data networks, plus GPS, LightBug claims to have found a solution to the challenges of competing products.  Perfect for pets, children and anything else that may go missing.  No contracts on the data either.  The battery may need a little help from time to time but still stays charged for up to a month.

How much say you? Just £77 with 2 free years of data.  Crowdfunding on Kickstarter now.

It takes the best features of a Bluetooth Tag (proximity detection and buzzer alerts) and combines them with the functionality of a full GPS/GPRS tracker (absolute positioning and “infinite” range).
