Update: “Mystery Science Theater 3000” Completes Kickstarter Funding Round; Secures Over $5.7M For First Season

Mystery Science Theater

Mystery Science Theater 3000 fans: its finally happening! The cult classic is gearing up for its official reboot thanks to its Kickstarter initiative. The project successfully secured $5,764,229 from 48,270 backers

Mystery Science Theater 3000 logoCreator of the show, Joel Hodgson, took to the crowdfunding giant last month with a mission to raise as much funds as he can for the first season since the series ended in 1999.  The original $2 million campaign goal would fund three full-length episodes, and $5.5 million would fund a season of 12 episodes. Not only will the show now have 12 episodes, it will also have potential star cameos that include Neil Patrick Harris, Jack Black, and even MARK HAMILL!

In a recent update, Hodgson and his team revealed that during the campaign’s one-month funding round, they also announced the following:

  • Introduced the next cast: Jonah, Felicia, Patton, Hampton, and Baron.
  • Announced some of the writers, artists and cameos.
  • Updated official FAQ with answers to tons of your questions.

Rewards range from a MST3K information club membership certificate for a pledge of $10 or more, to a pretty sweet VIP package including a position as an executive producer for the full new season for a pledge of $10,000/$25,000 or more (listed as $10,000, due to Kickstarter limitations).

Hodgson previously shared with Yahoo! the details about the campaign, including what inspired him and his team to launch the project:

Joel Hodgson“The Kickstarter was my idea. I’d been working with Shout Factory trying to get the rights to MST3K for the last five years, and we finally closed the deal three months ago. I just think it’s really important to me that we start with the fans and talk to them, measure how interested they are and how much they care. If I had just done a traditional network deal and then talked to them, it didn’t feel right to me. I didn’t care whether it was 10 people or 100,000 people, I just wanted to know who they are, what they want, what their expectations are.”

The digital downloads are set to be available in November 2016 and the Blu-ray will be available in winter 2017.
