Last week, the Amplifier Foundation, teamed up with 2008 President Obama HOPE artwork creator Shepard Fairey, Colombian American muralist Jessica Sabogal, and Los Angeles artist Ernesto Yerena, to launch a Kickstarter campaign for “We the People” artwork, which will be presented at Inauguration Day this Friday (January 20th).

we-the-people-3The campaign’s description reads:

“Eight years ago, the artist Shepard Fairey made the iconic image that captured a period of HOPE in America. Today we are in a very different moment, one that requires new images that reject the hate, fear, and open racism that were normalized during the 2016 presidential campaign. So on Inauguration Day, We the People will flood Washington, DC with NEW symbols of hope.”

The “We the People” artwork has notably been commissioned by the Amplifier Foundation and the organization stated that some of the greatest activist artists working today, including Shepard, Yerena, and Sabogal, have collaborated with photographers to create a series of images that the organization believes to have captured the shared humanity of our diverse America. The organization also revealed plans to present the artwork on Inauguration Day:

“Much of Washington will be locked down on Inauguration Day, and in some areas there will be severe restrictions on signs and banners.  But we’ve figured out a hack.  It’s called the newspaper!  On January 20th, if this campaign succeeds, we’re going to take out full-page ads in the Washington Post with these images, so that people across the capitol and across the country will be able to carry them into the streets, hang them in windows, or paste them on walls.”

we-the-people-2Amplifier also noted it plans to distribute the artwork as large placards throughout DC at Metro stops, on the back of moving vans, at drop spots to be announced in the coming week through our social media feeds, and, on January 19th, as free downloads to print and share.

For every donation over $5 that the campaign receives will send a postcard of the art of the backer’s choosing to the incoming President after he takes office. Other campaign perks include sticker pack, Shepard Fairey Prints, All 6 We the People prints, executive producer credit and silkscreens

Originally seeking $60,000, the campaign has successfully secured $1.3 million from more than 21,000 backers and has less than 12 hours until it closes.
