Meritz Securities and Canton Foundation Partner to Advance Tokenization of Korean Assets for Global Institutions

South Korean brokerage Meritz Securities has entered a strategic memorandum of understanding with the Canton Foundation, marking a significant step toward exploring the tokenization of domestic financial assets and their potential integration into worldwide institutional markets.

The agreement, formalized earlier this month at Meritz’s headquarters in Seoul’s Yeouido financial district, brings together the firm’s capital markets expertise with the Canton Network’s privacy-focused blockchain infrastructure.

The signing ceremony featured Meritz Securities CEO Jang Won-jae and Canton Foundation head Viv Diwakar, along with other representatives from both organizations.

The collaboration centers on evaluating how traditional Korean financial assets can be represented on-chain while remaining fully compliant with existing domestic regulations.

Partners will also assess the suitability of Canton Network’s institutional-grade features—particularly its privacy protections for transaction information—for use within South Korea’s capital markets.Beyond domestic applications, the memorandum outlines plans for Meritz to engage with the growing network of global financial institutions already participating in the Canton ecosystem.

This could open pathways for cross-border initiatives, including the exploration of tokenized high-quality liquid assets such as sovereign-grade debt.

Such efforts aim to examine potential uses as institutional collateral, enhance capital mobility across markets, and support greater liquidity between trading and clearing venues.

Byungha Kang, managing director of Meritz Securities’ Strategic Planning Unit, described the partnership as establishing a foundation for connecting Korea’s capital markets with global digital asset infrastructure.

He emphasized a measured, phased approach that will track the ongoing development of the country’s digital asset regulatory framework before expanding the scope of cooperation.

The firm intends to proceed cautiously, prioritizing secure and efficient solutions as rules around virtual assets and security token offerings continue to take shape.

Viv Diwakar, head of the Canton Foundation, highlighted Meritz’s established strengths in institutional financing and structured products as particularly well-suited to testing new tokenization models and collateral mobility opportunities in Korea.

He noted that the partnership seeks to leverage Canton’s privacy-enabled technology to link Korean financial assets with broader global institutional markets.

The Canton Network, developed by the U.S. firm Digital Asset and operated under the Canton Foundation, is designed specifically for institutional participants.

It incorporates sub-transaction privacy protections that align with the confidentiality needs of traditional finance, while operating as a public blockchain.

The broader ecosystem includes more than 1,000 institutions, with dozens of major organizations serving as Super Validators on the network’s Global Synchronizer.

This agreement arrives amid rising interest among Korean financial institutions in distributed ledger technology.

Earlier collaborations involving other domestic securities firms have already explored similar infrastructure, and Meritz has separately examined digital asset opportunities with other technology providers.

The Canton partnership remains exploratory rather than a product launch, with any concrete services expected to develop gradually in line with regulatory progress.

For Meritz, the initiative aligns with its long-standing focus on institutional clients and its preparation for South Korea’s evolving security token offering environment.

For the Canton Foundation, it represents further expansion into Asian capital markets as part of a broader strategy to build interconnected, privacy-preserving infrastructure for real-world financial assets.

As South Korea continues refining its digital asset rules, the partnership positions both parties to evaluate practical applications that could improve efficiency, transparency where appropriate, and cross-border access without compromising institutional requirements for privacy and compliance.
