The Great Equalizer: How Main Street Capitalism Can Create an Economy for Everyone – Washington, DC

March 14, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm EDT

Reception & Book Discussion  with David Smick, Author, The Great Equalizer: How Main Street Capitalism Can Create an Economy for Everyone

Interviewed by Jimmy Kemp, Jack Kemp Foundation

Please join the Jack Kemp Foundation and the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council on March 14th, for a discussion with best-selling author David Smick about his new book The Great Equalizer: How Main Street Capitalism Can Create an Economy for Everyone.  Jimmy Kemp will interview David followed by a question and answer session with the audience.  The event will conclude with a reception.

In a recent Wall Street Journal above the fold Oped, Dave Smick and John Mueller write about the hope for tax reform for the first time since 1986. Entrepreneurs and future small business men and women desperately need it!  As Jack Kemp used to say, “capitalism without capital is nothing but an ‘ism.”  It means access to capital can’t be concentrated in the hands of Wall Street, but has to also be available to Americans on Main Street who are the real engine for our future.

As Chief of Staff to Congressman Jack Kemp from 1978-1984, David Smick played a vital role in implementing the incentive-based legislative accomplishments (some say “supply-side”) that formed the substance of Reaganomics. Since then, he has worked as a macroeconomic strategist for many prominent global financial institutions. His first book, the award-winning The World is Curved: Hidden Dangers to the Global Economy, was an international bestseller and foresaw the 2007-2008 financial crisis.  David Brooks of the New York Times called the book “astonishingly prescient.”

Smick’s new book, The Great Equalizer: How Main Street Capitalism Can Create an Economy for Everyone (PublicAffairs), reached #8 on the New York Times non-fiction bestseller list and is a USA Today and LA Times bestseller.  The book explains why the populist rise of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders was inevitable, how the decline in innovative startups is causing a collapse in economic opportunity, and why America’s risk-takers have been discouraged by a Washington culture of corporate crony capitalism, special interest deal-making and manipulation of regulatory, patent and antitrust systems.

Because of these problems, economic growth has stagnated throughout both the Bush and Obama Administrations. As an alternative, The Great Equalizer calls for a return to “Main Street capitalism” that allows all Americans to move up the ladder of opportunity and success.  Smick will comment on where he thinks the Trump Administration has an effective economic strategy in place and where he thinks things need to be improved.
