MANCHESTER, N.H. —Self-funding, also known as crowd sourcing, is a new way to raise money or fund projects through online campaigns, but how do you know your money is going where it should be?
Websites like gofundme.com are soaring in popular and millions of people have given money to various causes with the tap of a few keys. It can be called crowdfunding, crowdsourcing or self-funding but they all share a common goal: getting you to open your wallet.
“It’s definitely something that has exploded over the past few years,” said Senior Assistant Attorney General Anthony Blenkinsop, director of the state’s charitable trust unit. “I think that entities realize this can be an effective way to raise money.”
Blenkinsop’s job is to make sure you don’t get swindled.
