The Young Turks is a long-running online news program that was launched in 2002 as a source of politically progressive news and commentary. The program and its team are currently crowdfunding on Indiegogo to build a new studio, and they can now begin to celebrate as their campaign has met and exceeded a $250,000 goal with 11 days left. Host Cenk Uygur took to YouTube to thank his contributors in the video embedded below.
This is a bit of a remarkable commentary on why Indiegogo may be the right choice for some crowdfunders. Note that The Young Turks had a huge preexisting global audience with 1.3 million YouTube subscribers and more fans spread across various social channels. For this campaign, contributions from all over the world were important to their success, and that is one of the primary benefits of Indiegogo as a platform. They allow contributions from too many countries to list.
The Young Turks had been airing on Current TV for the last two years. When the channel went belly-up, TYT was left looking for studio space. They decided to take to Indiegogo to seek support from their fans in an effort to crowdfund cash to build a new studio. It worked.
To build a basic studio from the ground up we need $250,000. We recognize this is a significant amount but we are excited about this new chapter. We are excited about building something that is uniquely designed for TYT that we can call our home. We will start by building walls and laying down floors. We will install lights and hang curtains. We will set up work stations and hand pick equipment. We need cameras, microphones, audio mixers, monitors, and recorders. We also need to furnish the studio. We are starting from scratch and we would like to invite you to build it with us.
The TYT team plans on commemorating their donors via a donor wall in the new studio.
