Flying Robot Pocket Drone Has Raised Almost $600,000 on Kickstarter

The Pocket DroneThe Pocket Drone is your very own personal robot.  I know that someday everyone will have multiple personal robots beyond the roomba but I find it fascinating when consumer products get even closer to this goal.  Airdroids is one of these companies creating these new robots and they are successfully crowdfunding on Kickstarter now.

The San Diego based company fired up their crowdfunding campaign on January 8th and their funding has been pretty much straight up since besting their $35,000 goal.  It took about a week to cross the $200,000 line and they stand at almost $600,000 raised with more than three weeks left to go.

Team AirdroidsSo why all of the interest? Sure we all read about military drones and Amazon considering delivery by flying robots but Airdroids is offering something to the masses now – with a ship date of June 2014.  So what does The Pocket Drone do?  The flying multicopter can carry a payload of a high quality action camera.  It is ready to fly in minutes and you can set it on auto-pilot with an integrated “follow me” mode that programs the drone to follow you wherever you are.  Now the follow me mode requires a mobile with GPS but everyone has an iPhone or Android device these days so that is not an issue.  Think about it:  if you are out for a (brief) bike ride or snowboarding and you want to capture some aerial images, or video, of your ride – now you can do it all on your own.  Airdroid’s founders are positioning the product as a tool not a toy but one that is suitable for professionals and amateurs alike.

The Pocket Drone ControllerThe early bird packages are long gone but if you want a Pocket Drone out of the box ready to go the reward will cost you $495.00.  This includes everything you need to operate your own drone.

Flight time of the drone is 20 minutes, carrying a camera.  The drone is made out of carbon fiber so it should be pretty durable.

Founded by Timothy Reuter, TJ Johnson and Chance Roth these guys also founded the Drone User Group which apparently is the worlds largest group of it’s kind.  There is also a $10,000 prize posted on DUGN toe the most socially beneficial, documented use of a drone for under $3000.

Drone GroupAs a first version product the Pocket Drone is pretty amazing.  For the the GoPro users this may be the next must have device.
