We reported yesterday that a crowdfunding campaign was launched to honor Berkin Elvan who died yesterday. Berkin had been in a coma for many months after being hit by a tear gas canister launched by Turkish police last year.
Well the campaign raised their targeted goal of raising $57,000 in just over one day. In a backer update the organizers shared Berkin’s commemoration will be published by the New York Times on Friday, March 14, 2014.
The number of supporters stood at 1,528 at last count with the campaign scheduled to continue for another 6 days.
Organizers stated;
Thank you so much. Words cannot express the gratitude that we feel. Thank you. Thank you. This is the power of YOU with your five minutes, one dollar, and a prayer. Especially thanks to those who actively contributed to the overall effort.
Extra donations will be contributed by Güç Birligi – Washington, DC based non-profit.
