GoFundMe Donates 5% Campaign Fee to Nepal Earthquake Relief

gofundmeShowing support towards the victims of last Saturday’s earthquake in Nepal, crowdfunding platform GoFundMe has announced that it is giving the 5% campaign fee towards the relief initiative.

The platform shared:

“To all those affected by the terrible earthquakes in Nepal, the GoFundMe Team is thinking of you. We’ve worked rapidly to create the ‘Nepal Earthquake Relief‘ category and continue to work diligently to scan and review the thousands of campaigns that have been created to aid victims and send relief. This has been our #1 priority.

We believe that AmeriCares is best positioned to make an immediate impact by delivering aid packages of medical relief supplies to all of those displaced by the earthquakes.

“At the time of this announcement, about $500K has been raised within the ‘Nepal Earthquake Relief’ category. We’re able to keep our pledge for the first $5M raised in the category, for a maximum gift of $250K. GoFundMe will be making these gifts in regular increments to ensure that help is delivered quickly.

Nepal 1“We would like to thank all of the brave rescue workers and volunteers who are donating their time and resources to the relief efforts.”

GoFundMe also revealed details about its platform, along with its fee structure:

“GoFundMe operates on only a 5% fee deducted from each donation received. Separately, our payment partners charge a small processing fee of about 3% will also be deducted from each donation. Please see Pricing & Fees for more info.

Nepal 3“Very few organizations can claim that they help as many people on such a small percentage of total donation volume. While GoFundMe is a for-profit company, let’s see how our operating costs measure up against some famous charities dedicated to helping others: Red Cross(9.6%), Susan G. Koman for the Cure (17.2%) Wounded Warrior Project (42.3%).

“In short, GoFundMe is an incredibly efficient and effective way to provide financial support to those you care about most. Not only can donors give in an extremely targeted way, but more money goes directly to the intended recipients than most other organizations can claim.”
