French Startup Blue Frog Robotics Hits Indiegogo Campaign to Raise $100,000 for New Family Companion Robot “Buddy”

Blue Frog Robotics, a French tech startup based out of Paris, launched a crowdfunding campaign on  Indiegogo this week with a mission to raise $100,000 for its new family companion robot, Buddy.

Buddy 5Much like the recently Indiegogo-success family robot, Jibo, Buddy is a social robot that connects, protects, and interacts with each member of the family. By being open sourced and easy to use, the tiny robot protects the user’s home, entertains the kids, and helps everyone stay connected.

Some tasks Buddy can are the following:

  • Be a personal assistant: Reminds the users about important tasks and events that are in agendas.
  • Watch over the home: Patrols, monitors and alerts anything that happens in the household
  • Hands-free helper: Suggests recipes, plays music, and even answers calls.
  • A child’s friend: Allows children to learn through play while having fun.

Buddy is also equipped with a new developer program. Blue Frog Robotics shared:

Buddy 2“When you purchase the Buddy Developer Edition, you will be automatically enrolled in the Buddy Developer Program, which gives you full access to our SDK, technical support and access to a global community of Buddy Developers. By adding your application , buddy will grow and interact with you more and more. We provide you with the pre-installed technological building blocks – navigation, sensors, and recognition – giving you the tools to push the limits of your imagination.”

The company added:

“Buddy was built with popular development tools like OpenCV and Unity3D to allow as many developers as possible to collaborate with us. We are also developing a complete API to enable the developer community to start creating new tools for Buddy right away.”

Buddy 4Those backing the project can receive Buddy for the $649 (which would be the classic Buddy). For the Buddy Developer Editions, backers must give $749. The Developer will be delivered in April 2016 while the Classic will be in July 2016.

Since its launch, the campaign has successfully exceeded its initial goal. It is set to close mid-August.
