Barry Silbert’s Digital Currency Group Acquires CoinDesk

Bitcoin 2CoinDesk, a bitcoin / cryptocurrency media platform has been acquired by Digital Currency Group.  According to a statement by CoinDesk, the editorial and business teams will merge with DCG’s recently launched events platform while forming a New York based subsidiary focuses on the curation of news, research and events.

DCG was founded by CEO Barry Silbert who launched SecondMarket back in 2008.  SecondMarket became prominent as a preferred platform to trade non-public shares in growing companies thus providing liquidity to early shareholders.  Silbert departed SecondMarket last October after launching his Bitcoin Investment Trust and DGC. CoinDesk is the newest addition to the DCG group of companies, which includes an investment portfolio of bitcoin and blockchain ventures.Barry Silbert

“It has been impressive to watch CoinDesk’s evolution over the past two and a half years, and we are committed to investing in new products and people that will further enhance the CoinDesk and Consensus brands,” stated Silbert.

CoinDesk founder Jeremy Bonney released a statement that they were “excited” to join DCG. “As the information needs of the blockchain ecosystem grow, CoinDesk will gain the resources and colleagues it needs to better serve readers with the high-quality, independent journalism readers have come to expect,” stated Bonney.

CoinDesk collaborated with Citi Ventures to produce last year’s blockchain conference, Consensus 2015. Hosted in New York City this past September, the event attracted over 600 attendees.
