On Tuesday, Arrow star Stephen Amell and his cousin, Robbie Amell, launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to secure $200,000 for the new film, Code 8.
“The film takes place in a world where 4% of the population are born with some type of supernatural ability. Instead of being billionaire superheroes, most ‘specials’ live in poverty and resort to crime, forcing the police to become more militarized. The story follows a young man with special powers (Robbie Amell) struggling to find work as a day laborer. After a dispute over payment, he finds himself in a confrontation with a police officer (Sung Kang) and the autonomous robots backing him up.”
Code 8 will be shot in Los Angeles and will also star Aaron Abrams (Hannibal, Blindspot, Chad Donella (Scandal), and Alfred Rubin Thompson (Club Dead). Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, Stephen will not be in the film, but will act as an executive producer. He stated:
“I had to jump straight from Turtles back to Arrow. But I’m going to do everything I can to help see this become a full length movie.”
“We made this short to prove to our fans and to ourselves that we could do something amazing. We think it turned out pretty damn well, and now it’s time to hit the big leagues. The short film is just an introduction to this world. We want to delve deeper! But, we hate spoilers, so we won’t say too much about the story. We can say this: this movie will be intense, it will feel real, and you will see a side of Robbie and Stephen that you haven’t seen before. Oh, and there will be robots, superpowers, and a ton of badass action.”
Those that back the project will receive some awesome rewards, which includes signed posters, apparel, tickets to various premieres (Toronto, Los Angeles, and Vancouver), and backers can even pay to be an extra in the film.
Since its launch, the Code 8 campaign has already surpassed half its initial goal and currently sitting at nearly $132,000 thanks to over 1,400 backers. It is set to close mid-April. See the short and pitch video below.
