Rebel Girls, try, fail, try again! In a new Kickstarter project for the children’s book Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls, 100 Stories about courageous, unconventional women who changed and are changing the world in “every field imaginable”– many of whom were also mothers (US reader reminder: Mother’s Day is this Sunday) — have been assembled by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo, co-founders of lauded Timbuktu Labs. Off to a swift start, their Kickstarter campaign quickly overfunded their initial $40K goal to raise over $149,769. At this writing (the numbers quickly ascending!) over 3,038 people have backed the project and the campaign now has its eyes on its stretch goal: $200K. When this goal is hit, each hardcover copy of Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls will include a pack of temporary tattoos for rebel girls.
Quick, who do you count among the global women rebels? Frida Kahlo, Serena Williams, The Brontës, Elizabeth I, Julia Child, Ruth Bader Ginsberg… Who will best inspire your daughters, nieces, neighbors as they begin their lives?
“Every girl deserves to grow up thinking she can be anything she wants… Our entrepreneurial journey made us understand how important it is for girls to grow up surrounded by female role models. It helps them to be more confident and set bigger goals. We realized that 95% of the books and TV shows we grew up with, lacked girls in prominent positions. We did some research and discovered that this didn’t change much over the past 20 years, so we decided to do something about it…But, by any means, read these stories to your sons! It is crucial that they learn to identify and empathize also with female heroes! The stories in the book are a great source of inspiration for anyone, male or female, child or adult.”
Four years ago Favilli and Cavallo, themselves rebels, relocate from Milan to LA to start their own children’s media company Timbuktu Labs to inspire children to create and explore. Today, more than 2,000,000 children from 20 countries play with their products that range from 12 mobile apps in the Apple App Store, 6 paper books in English, French and Italian and a toolkit that allows underserved communities to design and build playable spaces in collaboration with the NFL, Kaboom, Zynga.org and the YMCA.
As female entrepreneurs Favilli and Cavallo aim to give girls exposure to entrepreneurial women that they themselves lacked and celebrate their compassion, determination, curiosity… and the art of asking a lot of questions. In this global collaboration, international artists were also tapped including Ana Galvan (Spain), Helena Morais Soares (Portugal), Erin Marlow (USA), Elisabetta Stoinich (Italy), Debora Kamogawa (Brazil) and Gillian Gamble (UK).
“One of the most exciting aspects of “Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls” is that it will be created by 100 female artists. This means that they can work simultaneously on all the portraits and reduce dramatically the time it would take to just one artist to create all the portraits.”
The authors are also looking to the crowd for suggestions of women rebels, as the book is not yet completed. Lastly, Kickstarter backers will receive an exclusive coloring book to go with Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls which will feature 12 portraits of the inspiring female leaders. If people share the campaign info, they will receive three free e-books: 2 Science Comics to Spark the Love of Science in Girls and The Essential Guide To Raising Confident Girls. Backers expect to receive Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls in time for the winter holiday season. For more campaign details, click here. Twenty-two days remain on the campaign.
