Earlier this month, aspiring writer and director Shane Vader launched a campaign on Indiegogo to raise only $666 for his new film, Higher Powers. Vader describes the film as a satirical thriller that is about a small-town police department invaded by a dangerous and power-hungry supernatural force.
Following the campaign’s debut on the crowdfunding platform, Vader contacted filmmaker Guillermo del Toro on Twitter in hopes of attracting his (along with others) to the initiative. Not only did del Toro acknowledge Vader’s efforts, he also pitched in $618 to the campaign, which helped the campaign achieve its initial goal.
Vader shared del Toro’s tweet following the contribution:
During a recent interview with Forbes, Vader revealed details about Guillermo’s involvement in the film project:
“I had stepped away from Twitter for a few minutes when I got an email from Indiegogo, saying someone, going by an unidentifiable jumble of letters, had donated $618. My heart started racing as I googled the email address to try and figure out who this helpful person was but I had no luck. I opened up Twitter and there was my answer. I immediately woke up my fiancée to tell her what happened. We’re both huge fans of Guillermo del Toro’s, as an artist and as a person, and I had to let her know right away. She barely woke up and I let her keep sleeping while I soaked in the news some more.”
He then added:
“I had recognized and admired Guillermo’s generosity on Twitter, whether it was sharing fan art or film writing that he appreciated. I figured that if I was lucky he’d see it, and perhaps if I was REALLY lucky he’d retweet it. I never imagined he’d throw me $618 and tell me to get me to work.”
del Toro’s work is well known on various blockbuster films including Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, and Crimson Peak’s 2015 remake.
