South African Crowdfunding Platform BackaBuddy Hits R50 Million Milestone

South African crowdfunding platform BackaBuddy recently announced its campaign has successfully raised a total of R50 million since its launch from more than 70,000 donors.

Founded in 2007, BackaBuddy revealed that its online fundraising functionality is designed to help individuals raise funds for causes they care about through individual sponsorships. The platform stated:

In the digital age, most of us seldom see the inside of a bank – let alone have to write out a cheque. BackaBuddy’s online payment facility takes the fuss out of fundraising. Anyone can become a Charity Champion by creating a fundraising page on BackaBuddy and collecting donations in support of their favourite cause.  We believe in the power of individual philanthropy and peer to peer giving through technology. Speaking about the platform’s latest milestone, BackaBuddy CEO, Patrick Schofield, stated:

“As a platform, BackaBuddy allows us to come together as communities to support people and causes that we believe in, regardless of our differences. For every cause, accident or catastrophe that we face, we bear witness to the many who step up when asked to by their peers. This is the immense power that crowdfunding facilitates and which goes far beyond just the funds that are raised. We need to build bridges in South Africa across social, political and racial divides. Each campaign launched has the capacity to draw people together around common causes that we believe in, binding us together as a nation through positive stories and impact.”

BackaBuddy invites South Africans to start their own campaigns and to support causes.
