Just days after supporters of Andrew McCabe launched a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe for his legal defense fund, the former FBI deputy director announced the initiative will close at 7 p.m. this evening. As previously reported, the fundraiser raised more than $400,000 less than 24 hours after its launch and is now nearly $550,000 thanks to more than 13,000 supporters. Its description reads:
“Andrew McCabe’s FBI career was long, distinguished, and unblemished. He embraced the most daunting, difficult, and important challenges that the FBI and the country could assign to him over the past 21 years. He served the United States with courage and distinction in the days following the President’s summary dismissal of former Director James Comey, in one of the most tumultuous periods in the Bureau’s history. His reward for that has been a termination that was completely unjustified, amidst repeated ad hominem attacks by the President of the United States.”
According to the Washington Post, McCabe revealed in a statement that he “never imagined that I would need to rely on this type of assistance,” and the support “has been simply overwhelming and has led to contributions that have left us stunned and extraordinarily grateful.” He also stated:
“Hopefully our efforts, fueled by this incredible support, will encourage others to stand up for themselves, and the truth, as well,” he said. “It is not lost on me that each contribution reflects not just someone’s well wishes, but also their acknowledgment that something in this situation is not fair or just.”
All funds will be used for McCabe’s legal defense. His legal team is notably being led by former Department of Justice Inspector General Michael R. Bromwich at Robbins, Russell, Englert, Orseck, Untereiner & Sauber LLP.
