Sheetz a sizeable gas station and convenience store chain in the US will start accepting cryptocurrency as payment. The ability to accept crypto has been made feasible in a new partnership with Flexa.
In a medium post, Linda Smith, Payments Manager for Sheetz, explained:
“Above all else, our mission at Sheetz is to continue providing our customers with the ultimate one-stop-shop where they can refuel their car and refresh their body. As a result, we are constantly innovating and exploring new offerings to truly give our customers what they want, when they want it, 24/7/365 — that includes accepting many forms of payment. We’re very excited to be working with Flexa to roll out support for cryptocurrencies and other types of digital assets at our stores.”

Flexa is a payments provider that is already in use at 41,336 locations in the US and Canada. Flexa accepts more routine forms of value like US dollars and the Loonie but also is able to handle transfers of stablecoins like USDC as well as certain other digital assets like Bitcoin or Ether and other cryptocurrencies.
Trevor Filter, co-founder of Flexa, said that Sheetz is one of the most forward-thinking brands in the business.
“We’re absolutely elated that Flexa can help them become the first convenience and retail chain to accept digital currencies directly at the pump.”
For a consumer, you will be able to fill your tank or use crypto to shop inside the over 600 convenience store locations.
Of note, is the fact that to make all of this work, Sheetz/Flexa had to work with old-school point of sale service provider NCR.
Tim Vanderham, Chief Technology Officer of NCR, said that connecting via the existing POS gateway was pretty simple and quick to integrate. He added that retailers benefit through “increased loyalty, lower transaction fees, and reduced fraud while improving convenience and choice for shoppers.”
Sheetz states that it is the very first convenience store in the US to accept crypto on this scale.
