Roger Ver, aka Bitcoin Jesus, has been charged with tax fraud.
According to a statement by the US Department of Justice, Ver was arrested this weekend in Spain. He has been charged with mail fraud, tax evasion and filing false tax returns. Ver had acquired citizenship in St. Kitts and Nevis, having renounced his US citizenship. The DOJ stated that Ver was still required to report capital gains in the US, including sales of Bitcoin.
The DOJ said that Ver hired a law firm to aid him in his tax filings, but the firm allegedly “substantially undervalued the two companies and their 73,000 Bitcoins and did not report that Ver owned any bitcoins personally.”
The DOJ claims that Ver caused the IRS a loss of at least $48 million.
