Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission Grants Fintech Airwallex Licence to Offer Asset Management Services

Airwallex announced that Airwallex Capital is now licensed by the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong (SFC) in order to offer asset management services, paving the way for the upcoming launch of its Airwallex Yield in Hong Kong early next year.

As explained in a blog post, Airwallex Yield should allow clients to earn a return on “multi-currency funds” with no minimum lock-up period required.

Airwallex Yield is designed to give businesses opportunities to do the following:

  • Boost returns on their multi-currency funds via Airwallex Capital’s investments into highly-rated money market funds with decades of strong performance.
  • Grow their multi-currency balances without having to open a foreign bank account.
  • Avoid lock-up periods, hence easily move funds between cash balances and their Airwallex Yield account whenever needed to keep growing the business.

Airwallex Yield was initially introduced in Australia in November 2023 by Airwallex Capital’s sister company, and has since managed to attracted more than AUD 100M in funds under management.

Commenting on the newly acquired license, Arnold Chan, Airwallex APAC General Manager said, said that Airwallex is proud to have received a licence for asset management services in Hong Kong, via Airwallex Capital.

Chan added that this makes Airwallex the first global payments group to obtain such a licence in Hong Kong.

Airwallex Capital Hong Kong Limited is reportedly licensed by the Securities & Futures Commission of Hong Kong to provide Type 4 (advising on securities) and Type 9 (asset management) regulated activities.

In Hong Kong, Airwallex Yield will be a “discretionary portfolio management” service provided by Airwallex Capital Hong Kong Limited.

Airwallex Yield is provided in Australia by Airwallex Capital’s local sister entity.
