Bank Software Provide Marquis Target of Ransomware Attack. SonicWall Flaw Vector for Data Theft

Marquis, a software provider for banks that also supports compliance needs, has been the target of a ransomware attack apparently caused by a SonicWall flaw.

While there is no information on the Marquis website, multiple reports indicate that around 400,000 customers saw their information pilfered.

Apparently, Marquis experienced a cyber attack incident on August 14, 2025. Stolen information is said to include names, addresses, phone numbers, social security numbers, taxpayer IDs – basically the mother lode of personal information.

An example of the notifications sent to impacted individuals is here, where Anderson Brothers Bank pointed at Marquis as the cause of the theft. Another example from CoVantage Credit Union is here.

A list of the impacted banks and credit unions is available here.

Reports indicate that the notorious Akira Ransomware Gang is the culprit.

Marquis stated that law enforcement was contacted promptly and that the “incident was quickly contained.”

Marquis’s profound lack of transparency is disappointing. It will be interesting to see whether the company can recover after such an egregious breach of security and trust.
