Stand with Crypto, an association supported by multiple crypto organizations, has hand-delivered a petition demanding Congress move forward with the CLARITY Act.
A not-for-profit, Stand with Crypto has a mission of representing the 52+ million Americans who own crypto assets. The goal is to enact “common sense regulations” and to foster innovation for “greater economic freedom.” According to their website, to date, Stand with Crypto has made over half a million advocate donations.
One of the group’s first initiatives is a petition demanding that the Senate Banking Committee move forward with the CLARITY Act – crypto market infrastructure legislation that remains in limbo. A signed petition was delivered to Congress today with over 28,000 signatures. The petition is still accepting supporter names.
The petition states:
“The CLARITY Act will end the regulatory uncertainty that forces crypto users, developers, and companies to operate in grey areas – a problem that continues every day this legislation is delayed. The CLARITY Act will establish a clear, comprehensive framework that protects consumers from fraud and abuse, encourages the creation and broader adoption of innovative technologies, and strengthens national security by enabling the economy of the future to be built in the United States.”
Adding:
“We cannot afford further delay. We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to lead the world in digital asset technology and put the financial tools of the future within reach for every American.”
The CLARITY Act has been held up largely by the legacy banking industry, which fears competition from digital asset firms. A major hurdle is that if stablecoin holders generate yield or earn interest, it may cause some bank deposit holders to move money away from banks. Banks do not want to pay higher interest rates, with some currently paying no interest on deposits, to keep customers. Thus, there is concern about reduced profits due to potential competition.
