Coinbase Backs Tokenized Version of Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Private Markets Fund

Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN) has partnered with Abu Dhabi-owned Mubadala Capital and infrastructure specialist KAIO to create a regulated digital token representing Mubadala’s evergreen private markets fund. The announcement, made on July 23, 2026, marks one of the clearest signals yet that major institutional players are embracing tokenization of real-world assets.

Mubadala Capital, which oversees nearly $400 billion in assets, has long focused on private equity-style investments—stakes in companies and loans that do not trade on public exchanges.

Until now, access to these opportunities has largely been limited to large institutional or high-net-worth clients with established private banking relationships.

By converting a portion of this fund into a compliant on-chain token, Mubadala aims to broaden its investor base while maintaining regulatory standards.

Coinbase will play a dual role. Its Base blockchain is one of the networks that will host the token, alongside Solana and Sui.

More notably, Coinbase itself plans to purchase the token and hold it on its corporate balance sheet.

Partners describe this as the first instance of a major publicly listed US company using regulated tokenized assets for native on-chain treasury management.

KAIO is providing the technical and compliance infrastructure needed to issue and manage the token, ensuring only qualified investors can participate.

The process for investors remains tightly controlled. Prospective buyers must complete traditional off-chain onboarding through a licensed fund administrator.

Once approved, they receive an on-chain identity that determines which products they can view and subscribe to.

This hybrid approach seeks to combine the accessibility and efficiency of blockchain with the investor protections required in regulated finance.

Early interest appears strong. KAIO reports that the tokenization initiative has already attracted approximately $75 million from a mix of traditional allocators and crypto-native investors.

KAIO previously supported tokenized products for firms such as BlackRock, Brevan Howard, Hamilton Lane, and Laser Digital, and views the Mubadala collaboration as its flagship sovereign-wealth partnership.

The move arrives amid steady growth in the broader tokenized assets market.

Tokenized stocks alone saw their market capitalization expand roughly 600 percent over the past year, reaching about $1.7 billion by the end of June 2026, according to data from a16z crypto.

What began largely with crypto-linked products has expanded to include a wider range of US equities, exchange-traded funds, and other assets, driven by platforms including Coinbase, Robinhood, Binance, and Intercontinental Exchange.

For sovereign wealth funds, the appeal lies in potential liquidity, operational efficiency, and a larger global pool of capital.

Tokenization can reduce friction in subscription and transfer processes while opening doors to investors who previously lacked access to private market opportunities.

At the same time, the requirement for thorough off-chain verification and regulatory compliance helps address concerns around investor protection and market integrity.

This partnership illustrates how the worlds of crypto infrastructure and traditional finance continue to converge.

By bringing a major sovereign fund’s private markets strategy onto regulated blockchains and allowing a public company like Coinbase to hold the resulting token as a treasury asset, the initiative sets a precedent that other institutions may follow.

Whether tokenization ultimately transforms private markets access at scale will depend on continued regulatory clarity, investor demand, and the ability of platforms to deliver seamless yet compliant experiences. For now, Mubadala, Coinbase, and KAIO have taken a concrete step toward that future.
