Spain’s Banco Sabadell Prioritizes AI Integrations in Organizational Overhaul

Banco Sabadell is said to be prioritizing artificial intelligence within a broader organizational overhaul to drive transformation and strengthen relationship banking. Spanish lender Banco Sabadell unveiled a significant redesign of its organizational structure, placing artificial intelligence at the core of its business transformation efforts.

The changes, announced in late July 2026 and scheduled to take effect on September 1, aim to accelerate the bank’s overall evolution, streamline operations, and reinforce its relationship banking model, which the institution views as the foundation for future growth.

The management committee remains unchanged, ensuring governance stability during this transition phase.

According to CEO Marc Armengol, the revised setup will allow the bank to focus greater resources and capabilities on strategically important areas.

“This new structure will enable us to concentrate more resources and capabilities in the areas that are key to our strategy, accelerate the bank’s transformation and fully harness the potential of artificial intelligence to improve our processes,” Armengol stated.

A key feature of the reorganization is the establishment of a dedicated Corporate Transformation and Artificial Intelligence area.

This unit sits within the Strategy division led by Marc Prat and will be headed by Robert Duran.

Its primary mission is to accelerate the deployment of AI technologies across the entire organization.

Complementing this, the Operations and Technology division under Elena Carrera will receive enhanced AI capabilities, further embedding the technology into core banking functions and processes. In parallel, the Spain Business area directed by Carlos Ventura is introducing a new Business Transformation unit.

Led by Jorge Rodríguez Maroto, who also oversees retail banking along with expanded responsibilities for small businesses and the self-employed, this area focuses on speeding up product innovation for high-value clients, advancing digitalization, and driving customer-facing initiatives.

Additional adjustments in this division include the creation of a Commercial Banking unit under Albert Figueras and a new Personal Banking unit headed by Xavi Blanquet.

These moves align with the bank’s emphasis on specialized, high-quality service for priority client segments, including private banking.

Spain’s business operations will now be organized into five main units: Retail Banking and Business Transformation, Corporate Banking, Private Banking, Personal Banking, and Commercial Banking. Marketing will also report to Ventura.

Supporting functions such as people, legal, financial planning, organization, technology, and operations are being centralized to promote faster decision-making and project delivery.

Other refinements include expanded responsibilities in finance for cost management, procurement under the people and sustainability team, and fuller oversight of internal communications.

The redesign follows principles of aligning businesses with strategic priorities, increasing the pace of change, simplifying structures, strengthening accountability, fostering cross-team collaboration, and maintaining operational continuity.

By elevating AI and transformation as central pillars, Banco Sabadell seeks to modernize processes, enhance efficiency, and improve client experiences in an increasingly digital financial landscape. This strategic shift underscores the bank’s commitment to leveraging technology not as an isolated initiative but as an integrated driver of its relationship-focused model as well as more long-term competitiveness.
