China-based bots are seeking to create political and social havoc in the US. This is according to a statement distributed by X Global Government Affairs.
According to a post on X:
“The X Safety team conducted an investigation into suspected Chinese inauthentic accounts involved in influence operations: We identified a bot farm of approximately 200,000 accounts. Within this farm, we found 200 accounts posting in a manner that could manipulate a legitimate debate about American AI and energy policy. These posts contained claims that AI data centers are driving up household electricity prices and straining the grid. Others included AI-generated cartoons that depicted data-center operators enriching themselves at the public’s expense.”
X said they are committed to keeping an open platform where people can publicly debate issues, and they take quite seriously attempts to undermine the integrity of the “global town square.” X indicated they had suspended the bogus Chinese accounts.
The topic of data centers supporting the fast-growing artificial intelligence industry has become controversial because of claims that these operations will use excessive water and drive up energy costs. Both political parties have fallen prey to this narrative, which has largely been debunked.
At the same time, these data centers support America’s AI dominance while creating new jobs as policymakers seek to bring industrial services home.
China is the top competitor in the global AI race. The country is no longer a distant second to the US, and it is the only country that can challenge the US across the entire AI sector.
According to Stanford’s 2026 AI Index, the gap between the two countries in top models has tightened in recent years. The Index explains:
“U.S. and Chinese models have traded the lead multiple times since early 2025. In February 2025, DeepSeek-R1 briefly matched the top U.S. model, and as of March 2026, Anthropic’s top model leads by just 2.7%. The U.S. still produces more top-tier AI models and higher-impact patents, while China leads in publication volume, citations, patent output, and industrial robot installations.”
Chinese models are also less expensive, as leadership understands the importance of AI and aims to encourage greater use of their models.
China is the most dangerous adversary to America as it strives to undermine US ambitions, while partnering with countries like Iran, Russia and North Korea. China has publicly declared it will take over Taiwan, either by force or otherwise. Taiwan is not only a US ally but also a vital strategic provider of computer components, such as computer chips. The friction between China and the West is the most dicey geopolitical concern of the times, with growing concern that the dispute could go kinetic.
Next month, the White House is planning to host Chinese Premier Xi Jinping. Topics such as China meddling with US opinion, IP theft, abuse of tech products shipped to the US, and supporting rogue nations will certainly be discussed.
