Argentina Joins Global Crypto Tax Reporting Framework with Planned Data Sharing by 2029

Argentina has formally pledged to take part in a worldwide system that will automatically circulate information on cryptocurrency traders and investors, with the first exchanges scheduled no later than September 2029.

The commitment, recorded by the OECD’s Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes, places the country among 77 jurisdictions that have agreed to implement the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework, or CARF.

CARF was designed to close a gap that traditional bank-account reporting left open.

Crypto platforms operating in participating countries will be required to identify users who are tax residents of another participating jurisdiction and to collect standardized details: name, address, tax identification number, tax residence, and records of purchases, sales, exchanges, payments, and transfers involving digital assets.

Those reports will then move automatically between tax authorities.

Argentina will both send information about activity that occurs on platforms subject to its rules and receive data on Argentine residents who use platforms abroad.

The pledge does not create a new tax on digital assets.

It is an information-sharing standard intended to let revenue agencies compare reported crypto activity with tax filings and to reduce the risk that holdings or trades conducted through foreign intermediaries remain invisible.

Officials have emphasized that the framework mirrors, for crypto, the automatic exchange already used for conventional financial accounts.

Implementation will not be immediate.

Argentina must first write CARF rules into domestic law, designate the competent authority (expected to be ARCA), and set out the precise due-diligence and reporting duties that virtual-asset service providers must follow.

Commentators note that domestic legislation and operational systems will need to be in place well before the 2029 start date, with some accounts pointing to 2028 as a practical target for completing those steps.

The first reporting period that will actually be exchanged has not yet been announced.

Argentina joins Azerbaijan, Mexico, and the United States in the smaller group of jurisdictions that have chosen a 2029 start, while 46 others aim for 2027 and 27 for 2028.

For Argentine users of foreign centralized exchanges located in CARF countries, the practical effect will be that those platforms may treat them as reportable customers and pass transaction data through the international network to ARCA.

Users of locally registered platforms already face monthly domestic reporting obligations under existing Argentine rules; the international layer will extend visibility to offshore activity.

The change is part of a broader push, backed by the G20, to apply comparable transparency standards to crypto and fiat.

Tax authorities argue that consistent reporting will help detect undeclared gains and cross-border avoidance. Market participants, meanwhile, will need time to adapt identification procedures, data systems, and customer communications before automatic exchanges begin.
