President Donald Trump took the podium at the United Nations today to promote his administration’s success while addressing the audience. The presentation was broad, covering diverse issues such as the war with Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, the ICC, and the economy of the US. At one point, Trump reiterated his belief that fear of artificial intelligence (AI) was on par with the climate hoax while declaring that AI will now be renamed Super Intelligence or SI.
Trump also stated that the US leads and will continue to lead SI/AI development globally.
Concerns about rogue AI have recently risen dramatically. A statement from a former Anthropic employee predicted that humanity is doomed to end unless AI is reigned in, reigniting the ongoing debate over regulating AI and the possibility of the technology becoming self-aware and acting on its own mission.
Some pundits have said the concern is overblown and driven by adversaries through social media manipulation, as well as political advocacy groups seeking to undermine the US. Trump has vocally challenged these concerns, which he raised in his speech at the UN.
Earlier this week, Trump foreshadowed today’s comments, declaring AI is the next industrial revolution, or internet, but will be even larger and more impactful, possibly as much as 25% of the country’s GDP. The President added that he would soon appoint a new “AI Czar” to help guide the administration’s policies.
David Sacks, a venture capitalist and Co-Chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science & Technology, shared on X that AI has created a million new jobs, boosted productivity, and supported investments through AI growth.
“America is re-industrializing, including the first large private investments in power generation and the grid in a generation; In rural Richland Parish, Louisiana, teachers just received $50,000 bonuses from data-center tax revenue. Because the media portrays AI only as a menace, people tell pollsters they “don’t like AI.” Their behavior says otherwise. AI products are the fastest-adopted technology in history — faster than the internet or the iPhone. People like the tools, the jobs, and the tax base. President Trump understands the media hoax cycle better than anyone else. That is why he is refusing the “pause” that Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are demanding. A pause would not make America safer. It would hand the frontier to China. That would be a disaster for the American economy and for national security.”
The United States is typically ranked as leading the world in AI development, followed by China in 2nd place. Other countries that are ranked highly in AI development include the UK, Singapore, France, South Korea, and the UAE/Saudi Arabia.
