Google Parent Alphabet’s Third-Quarter Results Underscore Investor Caution Over AI Strategy Despite Strong Top-Line Gains

Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) reported third-quarter results that fell short of Wall Street forecasts for both revenue and earnings, prompting a sharp decline in its shares after hours as investors scrutinized the company’s massive investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

In early trading today, the company’s shares are down more than 11% as investors continue to digest the disappointing numbers.

The Google parent company recorded a 25 percent year-over-year increase in consolidated revenue, reaching $127.6 billion for the period ended September 30, 2026. This amount, while reflecting the firm’s 13th consecutive quarter of double-digit growth and putting it on a half-trillion-dollar annual revenue run rate, fell short of the roughly $128.2 billion consensus estimate compiled by analysts.

Operating income rose 30 percent, and the operating margin stood at 31.8 percent, yet net income available to common stockholders declined 25 percent to $26.2 billion, or $2.12 per diluted share, partly reflecting swings in equity investment gains and losses as well as the elevated costs of the AI build-out.

Free cash flow turned more deeply negative amid the spending surge, highlighting the cash demands of expanding cloud and AI capacity.

In the results, Google Cloud led with a 103 percent revenue increase to $30.7 billion, driven by demand for enterprise AI infrastructure, AI solutions, core Google Cloud Platform services, and sales of the company’s tensor processing unit systems.

Google Services revenue increased 11 percent to $96.3 billion, led by 12 percent growth in Google Search and other, which management attributed in part to the highest year-over-year growth rate in search queries in five years, including commercial queries.

Advertising performance, however, was disappointing.

Amid these financial developments, Alphabet highlighted a major product milestone: the Gemini app reached one billion users during the quarter, a level the company described as making it the fastest-growing product in Google’s history.

Management also noted that first-party model APIs processed nearly 32 billion tokens per minute, more than four times the volume a year earlier, and that Gemini 4 models had reached the leading edge of capabilities.

The firm further reported surpassing 150 million YouTube Music and Premium subscribers worldwide, including trials.

These AI adoption metrics came as investor focus intensified on the scale and payoff of Alphabet’s infrastructure spending.

The company has been pouring resources into expanding data center capacity and related technologies to support both internal products and external cloud customers.

While executives emphasized that AI investments are driving query growth and cloud momentum, the modest revenue miss against elevated forecasts and substantial cash outflows amplified concerns that heavy outlays could pressure margins and free cash flow in the near term before generating commensurate returns.

Analysts and market participants have increasingly weighed whether rapid user growth in consumer AI tools and accelerating cloud demand will ultimately justify unprecedented capital expenditure.

Alphabet’s results illustrate both the commercial traction of its AI efforts and the financial trade-offs involved in scaling them at speed.

With the company continuing to invest aggressively to meet demand and maintain competitive positioning, the coming quarters will likely remain under close watch for clearer evidence of how the spending translates into sustained profitability and cash generation.
