Banco Santander Launches AI and Quantum Computing focused Initiative

Banco Santander (NYSE: SAN) has unveiled a new initiative to scout the world’s high-potential innovations at the intersection of quantum computing and artificial intelligence. Titled Santander X Global Challenge | The Quantum AI Leap, the program is a collaborative effort with IBM, Bluzec, and the Oxentia Foundation. It targets startups and scaleups operating in ten key markets: Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, the United States, Spain, Mexico, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and Uruguay.

The challenge seeks disruptive technologies capable of reshaping industries such as finance, energy, healthcare, logistics, and cybersecurity.

By harnessing quantum computing‘s immense processing power alongside AI’s analytical capabilities, participants will tackle complex challenges including advanced system optimization and next-generation digital protection. Applications are divided into three distinct categories.

The first focuses on tools and hardware that accelerate the building and expansion of quantum systems, with AI playing a central role in boosting stability and performance.

The second category targets hybrid quantum-AI software, algorithms, and practical applications that deliver tangible results in the near to medium term.

The third emphasizes security solutions designed to safeguard data against emerging threats from powerful quantum computers, ensuring long-term privacy and system integrity.

Companies have until June 30 to submit proposals through the Santander X online platform. A panel of experts will then select six standout projects. Winners will share €120,000 in cash prizes—€10,000 each for the top three startups and €30,000 each for the leading three scaleups.

Beyond funding, successful entrants will join Santander X 100, an elite global network of high-potential innovators, and connect with the bank’s Fintech Station for open innovation opportunities.

Additional support includes expert mentoring from IBM‘s quantum and AI specialists, access to innovation workshops, and the chance to present directly to IBM Ventures investors.

Bluzec will contribute up to €10,000 per winner in tailored services, such as specialized quantum training from global experts and introductions to potential collaborators and funders.

Jaime Gómez, Global Head of Santander’s Quantum Threat Program, highlighted the transformative potential of these technologies.

He noted that quantum computing, when paired with AI, is poised to address some of society’s toughest problems, and Santander is committed to fueling entrepreneurship that drives real industry change and bolsters digital security.

Emily Fontaine, IBM’s Global Head of Venture Capital, echoed this enthusiasm, stressing the importance of nurturing innovators who are advancing scalable quantum solutions for practical business use.

Bluzec representatives described quantum-AI integration as the next frontier in technological progress, capable of unlocking unprecedented capabilities across sectors.

The initiative aligns with Santander’s long-standing dedication to education, employability, and entrepreneurship.

Over three decades, the bank has invested €2.5 billion in partnership with more than 1,000 universities and organizations across 13 countries, supporting over 8.3 million individuals and businesses. By bridging research with real-world application, Santander’s Quantum AI Leap challenge aims to accelerate the adoption of technologies that could redefine global competitiveness and security.
