Galaxy Digital Introduces Bitcoin focused Quantum Initiative to Safeguard BTC’s Cryptographic Foundations

Galaxy Digital (Nasdaq: GLXY) has introduced a comprehensive program aimed at addressing potential vulnerabilities arising from rapid progress in quantum computing. Announced on July 21, 2026, the Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative represents a significant commitment by the digital assets firm to support long-term resilience in the cryptocurrency’s cryptographic infrastructure.

Bitcoin‘s core protection stems from elliptic curve cryptography, a system that advanced quantum computers could eventually compromise using algorithms like Shor’s.

Although no quantum device capable of posing a meaningful cryptographic threat currently exists, experts note that development timelines are accelerating.

This urgency is underscored by milestones such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) finalizing initial post-quantum cryptography standards in 2024 and a US executive order establishing a 2031 target for federal systems to transition away from vulnerable classical encryption methods.

Galaxy’s initiative seeks to bridge critical gaps in preparation.

Due to Bitcoin’s decentralized nature, implementing protocol changes—including those for quantum resistance—requires extensive design, community review, testing, and adoption periods that can span years.

Currently, only a limited number of developers are focused on these challenges relative to their complexity and importance.

The program rests on three main components designed to drive progress. First, Galaxy is allocating up to $5 million in targeted grants for developers and researchers advancing post-quantum solutions tailored to Bitcoin.

Funding priorities encompass evaluating and implementing quantum-safe transaction mechanisms, integrating new signature algorithms, creating tools to help users and custodians transition securely, and conducting thorough security reviews.

Applications are now open, with proposals assessed case-by-case and payments linked to achieved milestones.

Second, Galaxy Research will produce in-depth analyses examining the quantum threat landscape, ongoing mitigation efforts, and their implications.

These publications target institutional investors, policymakers, and the broader developer ecosystem, aiming to deliver clear, evidence-based insights into an often technical and evolving topic.

Third, the firm has assembled a Quantum Advisory Council featuring prominent specialists to provide expert guidance.

The council will help shape research directions, assess grant submissions, and anchor the initiative in cutting-edge knowledge. Inaugural members include Barry Sanders, Professor and Scientific Director of Quantum City at the University of Calgary; Damien Bérubé, MIT Sea Grant Knauss Fellow; and Eran Tromer, Professor of Computer Science at Boston University. Council members will collaborate regularly with Galaxy’s teams and contribute to public outputs.

Mike Novogratz, Founder and CEO of Galaxy, emphasized the company’s leadership role: as prominent players in digital assets, the firm sees value in actively contributing to solutions that preserve Bitcoin’s security over the long term.

Alex Thorn, Head of Firmwide Research, highlighted the disconnect between fast-moving quantum advancements and Bitcoin’s development community, positioning Galaxy’s efforts as a vital link through both funding and accessible information.

Barry Sanders echoed the need for action, noting that global governments and sectors are already mobilizing and Bitcoin must follow suit.

Galaxy encourages collaboration across the industry, welcoming other organizations to co-fund grants, share research, or support developers.

This collective approach is seen as essential for navigating the quantum era.

The launch underscores a growing industry focus on digital assets amid technological shifts. By investing resources and expertise now, Galaxy aims to help ensure Bitcoin remains resilient against tomorrow’s computational challenges.
