Fintech Airwallex and Visa Partner on Embedded Finance for Freight and Shipping Platforms

Visa (NYSE: V) and Airwallex have announced a partnership to create specialized embedded-finance tools for freight and shipping platforms. The collaboration focuses on modernizing payments, enhancing working capital access, and streamlining cross-border transactions for logistics businesses.

Announced on July 23, 2026, the initiative combines Visa’s deep knowledge in commercial payments, acceptance strategies, risk management, and tailored industry solutions with Airwallex’s strengths in embedded finance, multi-currency systems, and global platform technology.

Together, the companies seek to resolve persistent issues in the freight sector, including prolonged settlement times, limited working capital, foreign-exchange complications, and operational inefficiencies.

Rather than relying on generic payment methods, the partners are designing offerings that align with the practical demands of freight and shipping operations.

This will allow digital platforms to integrate payment and financial features directly into their workflows.

As a result, customers can better control expenses, secure working capital as needed, and transfer funds more easily across borders and currencies.

While freight platforms, digital forwarders, and logistics marketplaces have advanced the booking, management, and movement of goods, the underlying financial systems have frequently lagged.

Many operators still depend on disjointed processes that delay settlements, raise administrative burdens, and strain cash flow.

Industry data indicates that shipping payments typically take about 42 days to reach the invoicing party, and labor-intensive manual document handling can account for nearly one-fifth of total transportation costs.

This effort builds on the existing relationship between Visa and Airwallex, extending their prior work on cross-border business-to-business payments into more specialized, sector-focused solutions.

The companies aim to establish a scalable framework that brings the advantages of embedded finance to other complex B2B industries where conventional payment systems have struggled to match digital progress.

Alessandro Figueroa, Head of New Verticals & Partnerships for Visa Commercial Solutions in Europe, noted that freight and shipping underpin the global economy, yet many firms still use fragmented, manual, and inefficient payment methods.

As digital platforms expand, he said, there is increasing demand for financial tools that integrate smoothly into current processes without adding complexity.

Combining Visa’s commercial payments expertise with Airwallex’s technology platform will help introduce new solutions rapidly, allowing platforms to simplify payments, boost working capital, and provide greater value to their users.

Christos Chamberlain, General Manager for the UK and Europe at Airwallex, emphasized the opportunity cost of delayed funds: money held up during cross-border clearing could instead finance the next shipment.

Reliability defines success in shipping—ensuring containers arrive on time, every time—and payments should operate with equivalent speed and accuracy.

Partnering with Visa, he added, equips freight operators with the precision that global logistics requires.Airwallex, an AI-native financial operating system serving more than 676,000 businesses worldwide either directly or via platform partners, holds over 85 licenses across major regions.

Founded in Melbourne in 2015 and co-headquartered in San Francisco and Singapore, the company supports a range of services including payment acceptance, global accounts, corporate cards, and spend management for clients ranging from startups to large enterprises.

By embedding financial capabilities into freight workflows, the partnership promises to reduce friction, free up capital, and support the continued digital transformation of logistics. This development highlights how targeted collaboration between established payment networks and innovative fintech providers can address longstanding industry challenges and drive efficiency in global trade.
